South Africa is one of Africa’s most diverse destinations, offering everything from safari adventures and dramatic coastlines to vibrant cities and wine regions. Cape Town’s Table Mountain, Kruger National Park, and the Garden Route are among its many highlights.

Travellers should note that while South Africa is politically stable and welcoming to visitors, crime rates are high in some areas. Petty theft, carjacking, and armed robbery can occur, particularly in major cities. Protests and strikes sometimes cause disruption. LGBTQIA+ rights are protected in law, but caution is still advised in rural areas where attitudes may be less tolerant.

South Africa borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Eswatini, with Lesotho enclosed within its territory. Its landscapes range from the Kalahari Desert to lush coastal regions and mountain ranges like the Drakensberg.

International airports include Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), and Durban King Shaka (DUR). Domestic flights and long-distance buses link major cities, while car hire is popular for exploring. Attractions include Kruger National Park, Robben Island, the Winelands, and the Wild Coast.

UK nationals can enter South Africa for up to 90 days without a visa. Passports must be valid for at least 30 days beyond departure, with two blank pages. The British High Commission in Pretoria provides consular support.

The local currency is the rand (ZAR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are plentiful. Tipping around 10% is standard in restaurants and for services.

South Africa has good healthcare in cities, with private facilities of a high standard. Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended to cover private care. Malaria is present in some areas, particularly in the northeast, so check advice before travelling. Tap water is safe in urban areas but should be avoided in rural regions.
