Compare Cover, Not Just Cost

The lowest price doesn't always mean the right cover for you. Policies with similar premiums can offer different cover limits, excesses, and levels of protection, so it is worth looking at what you are getting as well as what you are paying.

With more than 30 years’ experience, Direct Travel helps travellers compare:

  1. Policies from our panel of insurers
  2. Different cover levels, benefit limits and excesses
  3. Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip options
  4. Policies that can consider a range of medical circumstances
  5. Additional cover for different types of holiday

Think about where you are going, who is travelling, the cost of your holiday, and what you plan to do while you are away. Make sure you take the time to review your options, and choose the cover that you believe best suits your trip.

Here's what to consider:

Emergency Medical Expenses
Medical treatment abroad can be extremely expensive. Compare the amount available for emergency medical treatment, repatriation, or hospital benefits, along with any excesses, conditions, and exclusions. You must declare your pre-existing medical conditions when going through a quote. Answer the questions honestly and accurately, as cover is subject to medical screening and acceptance.

Cancellation and Curtailment
Check whether the cancellation limit is enough to cover the prepaid, non-refundable cost of the holiday for each traveller. Remember that cancellation cover only applies for the insured reasons stated in the policy - double-check the Policy Wording or give us a call, so that you know the protection you have before you purchase.

Baggage and Personal Belongings
Look beyond the overall baggage cover amount. Policies often have separate limits for individual items, valuables, and delayed baggage allowance. Check the excess too, particularly if you are taking higher-value belongings.

Policy Excess
An excess is the amount that is deducted from the claim payout you could receive. A policy with a higher excess may have a lower premium, but might not be suitable for the cover you need. The excess usually applies per person, per section, and per claim.

Activities and Additional Extras
Your cover needs to match your plans. Check whether the policy is suitable for any activities you intend to take part in and whether you need additional cover for a cruise, winter sports, or other parts of your trip.

Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip
A single trip covers one holiday, within certain dates, to a specific destination(s). An annual multi-trip covers multiple trips within twelve months, in a certain geographical area, with a maximum duration per trip. If you travel regularly, an annual might be more suitable. If it's one family holiday a year, then a single trip might be all you need. Find out more about single trip or annual policies.
