The Åland Islands are a self-governing, demilitarised region of Finland, set in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and mainland Finland. While officially part of Finland, the islands are culturally and linguistically Swedish. Travellers come for the relaxed pace of life, maritime heritage, and natural beauty, making Åland an ideal destination for outdoor adventures like cycling, kayaking, and island hopping.

Åland is made up of around 6,700 islands and skerries, though only about 60 to 80 are inhabited. Most people live on the main island, Fasta Åland, home to the capital Mariehamn. The landscape is rocky and forested, with sheltered bays, red granite cliffs, and waters shaped by ancient glaciers. Summers are pleasant and relatively dry, while winters are long, snowy, and icy.

Most visitors arrive by ferry from Sweden or mainland Finland, with regional flights also available. Roads are well maintained and driving is straightforward, with licences from the UK and EU accepted. Public transport is limited but functional, while cycling is one of the most popular ways to explore. Crime is rare, making it a safe destination, though usual travel precautions still apply.

As part of Finland, Åland follows Schengen entry rules. UK travellers can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Passports must be valid for the duration of stay. For longer visits or residency, enquiries should be made through the Finnish Immigration Service or the Finnish Embassy in the UK.

The euro (EUR) is used throughout Åland. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and cashpoints are available in Mariehamn and other towns. In more rural areas or smaller islands, cash can be handy as not all shops accept cards.

Healthcare is of a high standard, with a hospital and clinics based in Mariehamn. Visitors from the UK should carry a valid GHIC (or EHIC if still in date) for emergency treatment. Travel insurance with full medical cover is strongly advised, especially for evacuation or private care. Drinking water is safe, and there are no special health risks when travelling here.
