Am I covered for an air ambulance?

An air ambulance can be covered when it is medically necessary and arranged or approved by the emergency medical assistance team on your policy. Their doctors decide how you should travel, so depending on your condition you may be brought home on a scheduled flight, with a medical escort if needed, rather than by air ambulance.

On our own Direct Travel policies, emergency transport has its own section. It can pay to take you to the nearest suitable hospital and, once you have been treated, to bring you back to the UK if the medical team agree it is right to do so. The same section can also pay for a friend or relative to travel out to your bedside, for children travelling with you to get home, and for search and rescue if you are reported missing or need rescuing. For policies bought from 8 January 2026 these costs are paid at a reasonable level with no fixed upper limit, and the policy excess may apply.

The other policies we offer word this cover differently, so check your policy wording for the details.

If you need emergency transport, call the assistance team before anything is arranged. Costs they have not agreed may not be paid.
