Am I covered if I get injured while intoxicated?

Usually not. Travel insurance policies exclude claims caused by alcohol or drugs, so if you are hurt or fall ill because you have been drinking or taking drugs, your claim could be turned down.

Our own Direct Travel policies exclude any loss that results directly or indirectly from the use or abuse of alcohol or drugs, or any related physical symptoms. This also applies where it affects a travelling companion or family member. Drugs prescribed by a doctor and taken as prescribed are not caught by this exclusion.

In practice, that means medical bills after a fall or an accident that happened because you were drunk may not be paid, even though medical treatment abroad would normally be covered. The other policies we offer have similar exclusions, worded in their own way in each policy wording.

It is fine to enjoy a drink on holiday. Just keep in mind that the bills for an accident abroad can be very large if your claim isn''t accepted.
