Everyone likes to let their hair down when they're on holiday, and for many people, that involves an alcoholic beverage or two. However, a recent survey has shed light on some surprising statistics that give an insight into just how keen British travellers are to begin their holiday boozing.
Indeed, the study - which was conducted by sunshine.co.uk and involved 2,000 British adults - has revealed that many of us head straight to the bar when we arrive at our destination, with 37 per cent of respondents claiming it takes them less than an hour to order their first drink of the trip after checking in at their hotel.
What's more, a surprising amount of tourists don't even wait that long, as almost one in five claimed they like to get their first alcoholic beverage in before they even get on the plane, by using their time at the airport to down a pint or two.
Ever so slightly less eager are the 11 per cent who have their first holiday drink while on the flight itself, resulting in just under one in ten Brits arriving at their chosen destination drunk, the Daily Mail reports.
For many, this is just the start of the alcohol-laced antics, with more than half of respondents claiming to drink at least some alcohol on every day of their getaway, and around two-thirds stating that their holiday drinking exceeds the normal amount they would consume if they were at home.
As a result, large numbers of Brits find that a significant proportion of their travel budget gets spent on booze, with tourists spending an average of £110 more per week on drinks than they would normally when not on holiday.
Of course, there's no reason why you shouldn't have fun and enjoy yourself when on a getaway, and if that involves drinking then so be it - but it's always a good idea to consider whether you might be taking things to an excessive level.
