Mexico Security Situation: What UK Travellers Need to Know

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has recently updated its official travel guidance for Mexico.

Travellers planning trips to parts of the country have been advised that, following recent security incidents, they should remain alert to changing travel advice due to violence linked with organised crime.

In recent days, Mexican security forces led a major operation targeting organised crime groups, resulting in the death of El Mencho - Mexico’s most wanted man. This has led to reports of clashes, road blockades and vehicle fires in affected areas, particularly in the western state of Jalisco. In response, authorities have increased security measures and urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution.

Travellers who are already in Mexico are being asked to follow local authority instructions, avoid affected areas, and monitor official travel updates. In some cases, temporary shelter-in-place guidance has been issued while security operations are still ongoing.

Some airports and transport routes have experienced disruption as a result of the incidents. Flights to and from certain destinations, including Puerto Vallarta, have been affected, and road access in some areas is temporarily restricted. Popular holiday destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen continue to operate as normal.

How to stay informed if you're travelling to Mexico:

  1. Check the latest travel advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) before you travel and throughout your trip: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mexico.
  2. Remain vigilant, particularly when travelling between different regions or unfamiliar areas.
  3. Follow instructions issued by local authorities, including any safety or movement guidance.
  4. Monitor updates from your airline in case of delays, cancellations or route changes.
  5. Stay up to date with official government announcements and local news during your trip.
  6. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid areas where incidents or disruption have been reported.
  7. Although millions of tourists safely visit Mexico every year, conditions can change quickly. Situations like this highlight just how important it is to stay on top of official guidance, so that you can make informed decisions and stay safe.
