Mounjaro, Wegovy, Saxenda. You’ve almost definitely heard of at least one of these weight loss jabs. And when it comes to travel insurance - yes, you need to declare them. In the UK, they’re only available on prescription, so whether you receive them via your GP or through an online medical provider, this will be on your medical records.
Generally speaking, these medications are prescribed in connection with conditions like diabetes, or to reduce the risks associated with obesity. On our medical declarations for travel insurance, we always ask that you declare the condition behind existing medication. On this basis, you’d declare either Diabetes or Obesity, but if you’re having the injection “just to lose weight”, this still needs to be accounted for. If this is the case, you can declare Weight Loss Injections, and the following questions will assess the associated risks.
If you don’t declare your weight loss medication, you could actually invalidate your policy. This means that any claim on any section of the policy you might need to make, may be rejected. Travel insurance is based on trust, and providers expect you to be transparent about your medical conditions - not just for accuracy, but for your safety.
Any premium you receive for travel insurance is always reliant on a combination of factors. Namely age, destination, duration, medical, and additional cover needed. A policy for a 45-year-old going to Indonesia for 2 months with multiple sclerosis, is going to be very different than a 60-year-old going to Turkey for a week with historical skin cancer.
It’s the same with a weight loss jab. Being on the medication itself is almost irrelevant in comparison to how it slots into your specific journey.
When it comes to travelling with medication, there are all kinds of regulations about what’s permitted in different countries all over the world. Make sure you travel with a written prescription, and check with your prescription provider how best to pack your injection pen.
If you’re poorly while travelling or find yourself in an emergency situation, make sure to disclose all medication you’re taking - including your jab! It’s also useful to let at least one other person know what meds you’re on, so that there’s someone to talk to if you’re not in the best position to speak to a doctor.
Do I need to declare weight-loss injections on my travel insurance?
Yes. Always declare them, even if you’re only using them for weight management. Failure to do so could invalidate your entire policy.
Can I take my injection abroad without issue?
Not always. Some countries restrict or ban certain drugs, so check the rules of your destination and carry documentation to prove your prescription is legitimate.
Will my premium go up if I declare it?
Possibly - but this is usually in combination with other factors. However, declaring it is still better than being left without cover when you need it.
What happens if I need medical assistance abroad and I’m on weight loss medication?
You’ll need to tell your medical assistance team the details of any and all medication you take regularly. As long as you’ve declared it, your cover should remain valid.
