What is a passenger sledge?

A passenger sledge is used to transport people across snow or ice, usually as part of an organised journey or resort transfer. It may resemble a sledge bus, with passengers seated while the route and movement are controlled by an operator.

This is different from recreational sledging or tobogganing down a hill, where you steer or control the sledge yourself.

Can I get travel insurance for travelling on a passenger sledge?

Yes, cover for travelling as a passenger on a sledge can be available through Direct Travel. Passenger sledge is treated as a Winter Sport, so you will need to add the appropriate Winter Sports cover when getting your quote.

Check that the Winter Sports extension appears on your Policy Certificate or policy documents. You must remain a passenger rather than operating, driving or towing the sledge.

What can travel insurance help with?

If you’re injured during an insured passenger sledge journey, emergency medical expenses and repatriation can be covered, subject to the terms and limits of your policy.

Depending on the policy and Winter Sports cover selected, cover may also be available for cancellation, curtailment and other travel-related problems. Travel insurance does not cover damage to, breakdown of or recovery of the sledge or the vehicle towing it. Check the applicable Policy Wording.

Passenger Sledge FAQs

Is passenger sledge treated as a Winter Sport?

Yes. You will need to add the appropriate Winter Sports extension and check that it appears on your policy documents.

What does passenger sledge cover?

Passenger sledge refers to being transported across snow or ice while an operator controls the journey. It can include an organised sledge-bus-style journey or resort transfer.

Does this cover ordinary sledging or tobogganing?

No. Recreational sledging or tobogganing, where you control the descent yourself, should be treated as a separate activity. Make sure your cover matches what you plan to do.

Can I operate or drive the sledge?

No. This activity is for passengers only. It does not cover driving, steering, towing or otherwise operating the sledge or the vehicle pulling it.

Should the journey be arranged through a provider?

You should book through an established provider and follow the instructions given by the operator throughout the journey.

Does it cover a sledge pulled by a motorised vehicle?

Cover can relate to your participation as a passenger, but it does not cover operating the towing vehicle. Personal Liability is not covered while using a motorised vehicle.

Is the sledge covered if it is damaged?

No. Travel insurance does not cover loss of or damage to the sledge, mechanical problems, repairs or recovery costs.

Can medical expenses be covered if I am injured?

Emergency medical expenses can be covered when the appropriate Winter Sports extension appears on your policy documents and the claim meets the policy’s terms and conditions.

Can I get cover if I have a medical condition?

Pre-existing medical conditions are considered separately from activity cover. Declare them when getting your quote, as cover is subject to medical screening and acceptance.

Cover is subject to the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of your policy. Read about the available Winter Sports cover, check the applicable Policy Wording and review your policy documents before taking part.
