Travelling with COPD

So, what is COPD and can you get medical travel insurance for it? Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the umbrella term used to describe a group of lung conditions such as emphysema, non-reversible asthma and chronic bronchitis. And yes, Direct-Travel Insurance may be able to cover declared existing conditions, including COPD.

COPD conditions make it difficult to inhale and expel the air from the lungs because of a narrowing of the airways. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean you cannot fly abroad.

The best advice is to be had from your own GP to see whether you are fit to travel. If necessary, it is worth getting a letter from them to provide to both us and your air carrier.

Tips for holidaying with asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema:

  • If you have a lung condition, warm climates that have salty air such as the Mediterranean Sea are favoured by people with similar ailments
  • It might be an idea to avoid extremes of temperature as this could inflame your condition. Ask your GP
  • Once you have picked a destination, be watchful of where you choose your accommodation. If you have a steep hill up to your apartment/hotel that you have to negotiate on foot you may not find this particularly comfortable
  • Are there lifts at your accommodation? You might need them
  • Make sure you know what the transport arrangements are from the port/airport to ensure they are suitable for your condition
  • If you think you are going to need oxygen while abroad it’s going to be crucial to arrange for this and ensure that your air carrier and destination airport will accept this
