LA Wildfires: What Travellers Need To Know

If you’re heading to Los Angeles or already there, wildfires in the area are causing some disruption. Fuelled by strong Santa Ana winds, these fires have spread across Pacific Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst, prompting evacuations and road closures. Over 30,000 people have had to leave their homes, and parts of Santa Monica are on the edge of evacuation zones.

For travellers, the good news is that Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is still open, with most flights running on schedule. However, high winds could make for a bumpy landing, so check with your airline for updates. Roads are a different story - major routes like the Pacific Coast Highway are closed, so plan extra time if you’re driving and keep an eye on local traffic alerts.

If you’re planning to visit attractions like Universal Studios or the Getty Villa, they’re temporarily closed due to the fires. Other shops and restaurants may also be affected, even outside the evacuation areas. Air quality might be poor in some spots, so it’s worth packing a mask if you’re out and about.

Travel insurance could come in handy during situations like this. Some policies cover cancellations or disruptions caused by natural disasters. If your accommodation is affected, you might be eligible for alternative arrangements. It’s a good idea to review your policy and reach out to your insurer if you’re unsure.

If you’re in LA, stay up-to-date with local news and follow advice from authorities like CAL FIRE. Evacuation orders are in place for safety, so take them seriously. If you need help with travel plans, contact your airline, hotel, or tour operator. And remember, British travellers can call the UK consulate in Los Angeles or the Foreign Office for emergency assistance.

While this might not be the trip you envisioned, staying informed and flexible will help you navigate these challenges safely. Stay safe and take care!
