Hurricane Milton Set to Make Landfall Wednesday

As Florida continues to recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Helene just over a week ago, another powerful storm is looming. Tropical Storm Milton, which intensified into a hurricane on Sunday, is expected to strengthen further and become a major hurricane today. Meteorologists predict it will hit the Florida coastline on Wednesday, with the Tampa Bay area at the centre of its projected path.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported early today that Milton's winds have already reached 100 mph, and the storm is gaining strength as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico. Florida officials are urging residents to prepare for the incoming hurricane, especially those areas already hard-hit by Helene’s destruction.

Hurricane Helene, which struck the Southeast U.S. just 10 days ago, left over two-hundred people dead, with hundreds still unaccounted for. Fourteen of those killed were In Florida alone, and significant portions of the state remain in recovery mode. Now, as Milton draws closer, 75% of Florida’s counties have been placed under emergency warnings, and evacuations have already been ordered in several areas. Manatee County's Anna Maria Island will begin mandatory evacuations at noon today, and officials in Pinellas County, home to St. Petersburg, are preparing for similar orders affecting over 500,000 residents in flood-prone areas. Evacuations at hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities across multiple counties are already underway to safeguard vulnerable populations.

Airlines are issuing travel waivers for passengers flying in and out of airports in Milton's projected path, offering flexibility for those needing to adjust their plans. Travellers are advised to stay informed of potential delays or cancellations by checking NOAA’s National Forecast Map.

With the possibility of a second major hurricane striking the state in less than two weeks, Florida officials are sounding the alarm. They are urging residents to act quickly in preparing for Hurricane Milton, warning that its impact could be severe, especially in regions still reeling from Helene’s destruction.
