Spend the night at the bottom of a beer barrel

Have you ever woken up at the bottom of a beer barrel? Perhaps some of the more hardened drinkers in the world may answer yes to this question, but for the majority of people, it is unlikely - we hope!

However, if you happen to be staying in the Landhotel Beverland in Ostbevern, Germany, you may just get the chance, minus the hangover.

A quirky new bed design has been introduced by the hotel in three of its 62 rooms, giving tourists the chance to spend the night in a cosy-looking beer barrel.

And the best part is, they aren’t just replicas, they are real! Until 1995 the barrels, which were made in the 19th century, were used to brew beer in the north-German Pott’s Brewery.

All it took to transform these 100-year-old brewing containers into comfortable sleeping areas was a little German ingenuity and some imagination.

By removing half a circle from the bottom of each barrel, the hotel was able to install a platform that holds a double mattress within.

Speaking to Rex Features, Landhotel Beverland sales manager Dominic Stern, explained: “The idea with the beer barrel came about in collaboration with the local Pott's brewery. In their beer museum they had this spectacular barrel that was in brilliant condition.

“So we decided to transform the barrel into a double bed to be used in the hotel. We thought about how we can offer our guests an experience that they would never forget.”

The rooms which are furnished with these boozy beds costs £88 per night and comfortably sleep two people. Aside from this pleasant novelty, the accommodation also includes a massage shower, DVD player and internet access.

It’s well known that the Germans take their beer very seriously, but this has to be the most extreme way to sleep off a hangover ever devised!
