Noma reclaims world's top restaurant title

Like many things in life, food seems to be becoming something of a competition these days, with restaurants across the world constantly striving to outdo each other in the pursuit of honours, prizes and prestige.

Among the most sought-after titles in the catering world is the number one spot on the annual S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, with one eatery in particular having developed something of a stranglehold on the accolade.

Indeed, Noma in Copenhagen has once again returned to the summit of the restaurant world after dropping down to number two in last year’s edition. In fact, the establishment’s failure to take to the top spot provoked something of a “restaurant mid-life crisis”, in the words of head chef Rene Redzepi, resulting in a full re-design of the menu in order to retain the title.

And it seems that all the effort has paid off, with Noma once again being named the top eatery on the planet by S.Pellegrino.

Known for its Nordic cuisine, the restaurant beat off competition from the likes of El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, and Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, which were ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

London was also well-represented in this year’s list, with two establishments from the city featuring in the top ten.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, for example, was ranked 5th, with the famously quirky and highly innovative cook having opened the eatery in 2011 following the huge success of his most famous restaurant, The Fat Duck.

Tenth place on the list, meanwhile, was taken by The Ledbury, which is located in Notting Hill and has a reputation for its high-class modern French cuisine.

Other restaurants to rank highly include the likes of Eleven Madison Park in New York, Mugaritz in San Sebastian and D.O.M in Sao Paulo.
