Tuesday is the cheapest day to fly

A recent study has revealed that more than half of the UK's most popular flight routes offer the cheapest air fares on Tuesdays. No one likes to pay over the odds for their holiday, so it's always worth looking for ways to save money on travel expenses.

One way in which holidaymakers can do so is to make sure they shop around for the cheapest air fare - something which can be significantly affected by the day of the week you choose to fly.

It makes sense that weekends would be more expensive, as people booking time off work tend to reserve whole weeks or fortnights, and therefore find it more convenient to take a holiday that starts when they leave work on a Friday, and ends when they return on a Monday.

Having a weekend at the start and end of a trip also allows people to get a few extra days in their destination without having to take more time off work, so it's hardly surprising that many travellers choose to do so.

However, a recent study by Momondo has revealed the extent by which airline prices go up at the weekends, providing an indication of how much can be saved by flying during the week.

Looking at the 40 most popular flight routes among UK passengers, the report discovered that the average difference in price between flying on the cheapest and most expensive days of the week was 18 per cent, with this rising to 36 per cent in some individual cases.

For all routes involved in the research, fares were found to be costlier at the weekend, with Tuesday proving to be the cheapest day for 58 per cent of journeys. The study also showed Wednesday to be the cheapest day for 28 per cent of routes, with the remaining 14 per cent offering the lowest fares on Mondays and Thursdays.

As well as finding the most affordable air fare, holidaymakers are advised tocompare travel insurance costs online before purchasing a policy, with this being another great way to save money on the overall price of a trip.
