Veganuary Getaways

Challenging yourself to Veganuary this year? Also planned some time off work to take a winter break? Well, we’ve had a go at combining the two to give you a list of the best places to travel alongside a plant-based diet.

Hungary

Budapest is paradise for vegans, with more than 23 vegan restaurants and an impressive range of plant-based options available in supermarkets such as Aldi and Tesco. There are also organic shops dotted all over the place, selling plant-based cheeses and yoghurts, as well as staples like lentils and egg-free pasta. Outside Hungary’s capital, it can become slightly more difficult to find vegan alternatives, but it’s still manageable!  Hungary is even doing its own version of Veganuary: Veganuár.

Germany

Berlin is often hailed as the vegan hub of Europe, with plenty of vegan-specific restaurants and supermarkets. Even the smaller towns have extensive vegan grocery options, which really shows Germany’s encouraging approach to plant-based living. Berlin also hosts the annual Veganes Sommerfest, celebrating veganism with food, music, and talks. While you’re there, maybe you could stay at one of the city’s vegan, eco-friendly, organic hotels? Who’d have thought it, ey?

Malaysia

Malaysia really stands out in Southeast Asia for its vegan-friendly culture, thanks to the culinary influence of not only Malay cuisine, but also the fusion of Indian and Chinese foods. As a result, there’s a good amount of dishes which are either naturally vegan, or can very easily be made so. In regions like Kuala Lumpur, dietary needs are easily understood and respected due to not only the culinary, but also the religious diversity in Malaysia. If you’re willing to explore exciting combinations, this country is absolutely a vegan must-try.

Indonesia

Word on the street is that Indonesia really knows its stuff when it comes to catering for vegans! Plenty of the most common dishes are made with local ingredients like tempeh, jackfruit, or coconut, which are all vegan. Otherwise, loads of meals can be made vegan by simply removing or swapping elements. The island of Bali is home to numerous vegan cafes, retreats, and resorts, providing plant-based dishes like urap-urap, nasi campur, and tempeh satay.
