Meet the Microcation

Not every holiday has to be a two-week epic. In fact, one of the biggest travel trends right now proves the opposite: welcome to the world of microcations. That’s an American-coined combo of the words ‘micro’ and ‘vacation’ in case you missed it.

A microcation is a short getaway (usually a max of four nights) that has all the excitement of a longer holiday, but with less stress on both your calendar and your wallet. Think long weekends by the coast, a few days exploring a nearby city, or even a mini mountain retreat.

Big Adventures, Small Packages

Life feels busier than ever before, making it much more difficult to find the time for a decent break. Between work, family, friends, parents, yoga, budgeting, and limited paid time-off, more and more of us are turning to shorter holidays as a way to basically, utilise the weekend. Here’s why they’re so popular:

  1. Less planning, more doing. Quick trips are easier to pull together, whether it’s a spontaneous weekend abroad or a short drive to somewhere new.
  2. Budget-friendly. Fewer nights mean less money on hotels and meals, freeing up cash for experiences you really want.
  3. Work-life balance. You can escape for three days without the dread of returning to a four-digit inbox.
  4. More travel, more often. Instead of one big trip a year, microcations let you spread adventures throughout the calendar.

Make Your Microcation Count

Since time is short, a little strategy goes a long way.

Choose smart destinations. Aim for places you can reach with a single flight, train journey, or even a scenic drive. Less time travelling = more time exploring.

  2. Stay central. Go for accommodation options close to the main sights or activities, and try to think of it as a bed to sleep in rather than a place to stay. Proximity matters way more than luxury when every hour counts.
  3. Give your trip a theme. Decisions are much easier to make if there are fewer options. Streamlining your activities and having a focus can really help to keep things simple.
  4. Don’t overpack the itinerary. You really don’t want to cram all you can possibly do into three days. By the time you get home, you’ll hardly remember where you’ve been. Have a wander and enjoy where you are.

Go On a UK Microcation

The thing about microcations is that you don’t actually need to go very far to feel like you’ve had a proper break. There are some truly beautiful places in the UK to escape from it all for a few days:

  1. The Lake District – Mountains? Lakes? Independent cafés and old-timey pubs? This place is perfect for it. You can go for a proper walk, grab a lakeside picnic, hop on a boat on the lake, and just revel in how twee it all is.
  2. Bath – Ideal for the history buffs and the ones who love a good spa. Stroll through city streets, enjoy the Georgian architecture, marvel at Roman baths, and as the evening draws in, have some nibbles and drinks at some of the quirkier bars in Somerset.
  3. Cornwall – Well, it’s the coastal dream. Think surfing in Newquay, cream teas in St Ives, seaside beers in Perranporth, and clifftop walks along the South West Coast Path.
  4. Cotswolds – The quintessential countryside getaway. Sprawling market towns and villages of Cotswold stone set against a backdrop of rolling hills and National Trust sites aplenty. Perfect for the slow-paced amongst us - and if you can get there at Christmas… you’re in for a treat!

Spend even a couple of nights in these places and you’ll leave feeling refreshed, recharged, and ready to face the week ahead.

Your Travel Insurance

Just because your trip is shorter doesn’t mean you should skip cover. In fact, microcations are usually spontaneous and jam-packed - the kind of trips where plans change quickly, luggage can go astray, or something unexpected could cut things short.

That’s where travel insurance comes in. From medical cover and cancellations to lost belongings, having a policy in place means you can relax and enjoy every moment of your mini-break. After all, the whole point of a microcation is to come back refreshed, not worried about what could go wrong.

Small Trip, Lasting Impact

Whether it’s three nights in a spa hotel, a foodie weekend in Lyon, or a road trip through the Black Forest, microcations prove that you don’t need two weeks off to feel recharged. They’re affordable, flexible, and the perfect excuse to say yes to more adventures throughout the year.

So, where will your next microcation take you?
