What is a marathon?
A marathon is a long-distance running event covering 26.2 miles, or 42.195 kilometres. Most take place on roads, although the terrain and conditions can vary considerably between events.
Can I get travel insurance for running a marathon?
Yes, policies that cover amateur marathon running can be available through Direct Travel.
Select marathon running when getting your quote and check that it appears on your Policy Certificate or policy documents. Cover is for amateur participation during a wider trip. Professional running and trips taken primarily to compete in a marathon are not covered.

What can travel insurance help with?
If you’re injured while taking part in an insured amateur marathon, emergency medical expenses and repatriation can be covered, subject to the terms and limits of your policy.
Depending on the policy selected, cover may also be available for cancellation, curtailment and other travel-related problems. Travel insurance does not guarantee reimbursement of race entry fees if an event is cancelled, postponed or you are unable to take part. Check the applicable Policy Wording.

Can the marathon be the main purpose of my trip?
No. Cover is not available where entering or competing in the marathon is the main purpose of the trip.
Is professional marathon running covered?
No. Professional, paid or sponsored participation is not covered. The activity is limited to amateur running.
Can medical expenses be covered if I am injured or become unwell?
Emergency medical expenses can be covered if marathon running appears on your policy documents and the claim meets the policy’s terms and conditions.
Can I get cover if I have a medical condition?
Pre-existing medical conditions are considered separately from activity cover. Declare them when getting your quote, as cover is subject to medical screening and acceptance.
