What is karate?

Karate is a martial art that developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, now Okinawa in Japan. Training can include punches, kicks, blocks, set sequences known as kata and controlled sparring known as kumite.

Can I get travel insurance for karate?

Yes, policies that cover karate can be available through Direct Travel.

Karate may be listed differently across the available policies, including organised training and amateur competition. Select the option that matches what you plan to do and check that it appears on your Policy Certificate or policy documents.

Amateur competition can be covered during a wider trip, but not when entering the competition is the main reason for travelling. Professional, sponsored or paid participation and competing for prize money are not covered.

Organised amateur training can be covered when the appropriate karate activity is displayed on your policy documents. Follow the camp rules and train under the direction of an experienced instructor.

Amateur participation during a wider holiday can be covered. There is no cover when competing is the main purpose of the trip, or for professional, sponsored, or paid participation and competition for prize money.

Can medical treatment be covered after a karate injury?

Emergency medical expenses can be covered when the correct karate activity appears on your policy documents and the circumstances meet the policy’s terms and conditions.

Does Personal Liability apply while practising karate?

Personal Liability may be limited or excluded during karate training or competition. Check this section of the selected policy before taking part.

What if I have a pre existing medical condition?
