What is leisure cycling?

Leisure cycling means ordinary, recreational bike rides while you’re away. That might be hiring a bike for the afternoon, cycling around a resort, or enjoying an easy ride along local roads and cycle paths.

Can I get travel insurance for leisure cycling?

Yes, cover for recreational cycling can be available through the policies offered by Direct Travel.

Select cycling when getting your quote and check that it appears on your Policy Certificate or policy documents. Longer cycle tours, racing, mountain biking, BMX and other more demanding forms of cycling may be listed separately, so choose the activity that matches what you actually plan to do.

What can travel insurance help with?

If you’re injured while taking part in insured leisure cycling, emergency medical expenses and repatriation can be covered, subject to the terms and limits of your policy.

Depending on the policy selected, cover may also be available for cancellation, curtailment, baggage and other travel-related problems. Bicycle cover can carry specific limits and exclusions, so check the applicable Policy Wording.

Cycling FAQs

What type of cycling does this activity cover?

This activity is intended for ordinary recreational bike rides, such as cycling around a resort or following local roads and cycle paths. It should not be treated as cover for every form of cycling.

Can I hire a bicycle while I’m away?

Yes, recreational cycling on a hired bicycle can be covered. Select cycling when getting your quote, follow the hire company’s rules and check the bicycle before setting off.

Does leisure cycling include cycle touring?

No. Cycle touring is listed as a separate activity and should be selected if that's what you're doing on your trip. You should always pick the activity that accurately describes your plans.

Are mountain biking and BMX included?

No - these activities are listed separately and can have different cover conditions.

Can medical expenses be covered if I am injured?

Emergency medical expenses can be covered if cycling is shown on your policy documents and the claim meets the policy’s terms and conditions.

Are punctures and bicycle repairs covered?

No, travel insurance is not bicycle breakdown cover. You would need to seek more specialist cover if you'd like protection for the bicycle itself.

Is Personal Liability covered while cycling?

Personal Liability may be included depending on the policy and circumstances. Restrictions may apply while cycling, and it is not covered while using a motorised vehicle.

Can I get cover if I have a medical condition?

Pre-existing medical conditions are considered separately from activity cover. Declare them when getting your quote, as cover is subject to medical screening and acceptance.

Cover is subject to the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of your policy. Check the applicable Policy Wording and your policy documents before taking part.
