What's With Winter Sports?

For half of us, winter holidays are epitomised by hot chocolate, fairy lights, and cosy fireplaces. But for the other half, it’s the perfect opportunity to dive headfirst into the icy adventure of a winter sports trip.

Skiing and snowboarding are at the heart of winter sports. These activities are exactly what come to mind when we hear the phrase, but it’s not all about speed and slaloms! Sledging, ice skating, snowmobiling, husky dog sledding… there’s more than a few snowy options. When it comes to insurance, ‘winter sports’ incorporates almost all ice- and snow-based activities, so bear that in mind if the classics aren’t your bag.

A winter sports holiday combines action and beauty, but often comes with its own set of specific challenges. You need to prepare properly, and be cautious at all times.

  1. Are you bringing your own skis or snowboards, or will you rent?
  2. Don’t forget your helmets, gloves, and goggles.
  3. Make sure your clothing is warm enough for the temperatures you'll face.
  4. Check the weather forecast and watch out for snowstorms or icy roads.
  5. Keep an eye on travel advisories for potential road closures or flight cancellations.

The thing is, even with the most meticulous planning, some things will remain out of your control. That’s why it’s smart to arrange some sort of backup plan - and get yourself some travel insurance.

It’s always important to assess the risks of travelling, especially if you’re involving winter sports. Resort closure, trip cancellation, injuries, and equipment mishaps are all very real possibilities. That’s where travel insurance (inclusive of winter sports cover) kicks in.

  1. Trip cancellations: Whether it’s too much snow or not enough, winter sports trips are heavily weather-dependent. Insurance can cover your costs if plans change unexpectedly.
  2. Equipment cover: Damaged or lost rental gear? No problem - insurance can assist in covering those extra costs.
  3. Medical emergencies: Injuries on the slopes aren’t uncommon, and medical expenses in remote areas can add up fast.
  4. Mountain rescue: If you need medical help halfway up a mountain, the costs of an air ambulance can be extortionate. Insurance can help to foot the bill.

Winter sports come with their own unique risks, hence the ‘add-on’ or extension to a standard travel insurance policy. You’ll need to think about which activities are covered, how accidents/injuries on the slopes are dealt with, what to do if your gear gets damaged or lost, and absolutely what would happen in the event bad weather cancels your plans.

A winter sports trip can be the adventure of a lifetime, combining heart-pounding fun with awe-inspiring scenery. With the right planning and the right insurance, you can focus on the thrill of the slopes (or twirling on an ice rink) instead of worrying about what might go wrong. So pack your gear, double-check your travel plans, and get ready for the snowy escape you deserve.
