The MoneyHelper Travel Insurance Directory

What’s the MoneyHelper Travel Insurance Directory?

The MoneyHelper Travel Insurance Directory is a free service provided by the Money and Pensions Service, which is why it’s sometimes called the MaPS Directory.

It is a free tool designed to help people with health conditions find travel insurance providers who could offer more suitable cover. Rather than leaving you to search through dozens of websites on your own, it helps point you towards providers who are more likely to consider your circumstances.

It is especially useful if travel insurance has felt a bit more complicated than usual. You might have been declined before, quoted higher premiums than expected, or told that your condition can’t be covered.

When could the directory help?

The directory may be worth using if you’re struggling to get travel insurance because of things like:

  1. being on a waiting list for treatment or surgery
  2. waiting for tests, investigations, or results
  3. having a terminal prognosis
  4. being offered a policy that excludes the condition you need covered

It doesn’t mean every provider listed will be able to offer you cover, but it can give you somewhere useful to try next. And when you’ve already hit a few dead ends, that can make a big difference.

How does it work?

The MoneyHelper Travel Insurance Directory works by narrowing down providers based on your needs. It is not quite the same as a standard comparison site. Instead, it asks a few questions first, then shows providers who may be more suitable for your situation.
Here’s how it usually works:

  1. Get in touch with MoneyHelper
Visit the website or call 0800 138 7777
  2. Refine your search
This helps the directory understand what you may need from a provider, such as cover for medical equipment, being on a waiting list, or having a terminal prognosis.
  3. View firms who may be able to help
You will then be shown providers who could be suitable based on the information you have entered.
  4. Contact the provider directly
From there, you can speak to the provider, complete their medical screening, and find out what cover may be available.

Does this mean cover is guaranteed?

Regrettably, no. Every provider will still need to look at your own circumstances before they can confirm whether they can offer a policy. Things like your medical history, destination, trip length, age, and the type of cover you need can all make a difference.

The main thing to remember is this: if getting travel insurance has felt difficult, it does not necessarily mean you are out of options. The MoneyHelper directory may help you find providers who are better placed to look at your situation properly, and help you understand what options might be available.
