The earthquake is thought to have resulted in up to ten deaths in the Spanish region of Murcia.
An earthquake has resulted in a number of fatalities and a great deal of damage after it struck southern Spain.
The incident occurred last night (May 11th) and was at a magnitude of 5.2, causing buildings to collapse and damaging infrastructure in the Murcia region.
Reports suggest up to ten people have been killed but many more have been affected by the natural disaster.
A number of people were too afraid to return to their homes last night, instead choosing to stay outdoors in fear of further building collapses.
Rafael Gonzalez Tovar, delegate from the central government in Murcia Rafael, told national radio: "The whole of the centre of Lorca has been seriously damaged
"There are thousands of very disorientated people."
A statement issued by the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office suggests there are no reports of any British nationals being involved.
"We are aware that there was an earthquake in Lorca, southern Spain, yesterday in which there were a number of casualties and fatalities," the body notes.
It is keeping in touch with the Spanish authorities and explains there have been severe delays on the A7 and AP7 motorways as a result of the incident.
The town of Lorca is historic and has roots dating back thousands of years, with a number of Roman relics visited by tourists.
Travel insurance policyholders and other considering visiting the region would be wise to check for updates and contact their providers to assess whether their travel arrangements have been affected by the earthquake.
