Student opposition leader shot and killed

A student opposition leader was shot and killed in the city of Maracaibo on the evening of 1 October 2008. Police officers stated that a group of gunmen ambushed a car carrying the man and riddled the vehicle with bullets. The victim was a student at the University of Zulia and had organized demonstrations against the constitutional changes proposed by President Hugo Chavez. Police officers stated that the assailants quickly fled the scene after the attack. An investigation has begun into the possibility that the attack was politically motivated
