An earthquake measuring 6.0 on a 12-point scale struck near Tashkent, the capital, at 1326 local time (0826 UTC) on 22 August 2008. Although it caused panic, and buildings were seen swaying in the city, there have thus far been no causality or damage reports. The quake’s magnitude according to the Richter scale is not known
