Volcanic eruption disrupts flights around Anchorage

23 Mar 2009
Mount Redoubt, which is approximately 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska, erupted four times overnight on 22-23 March 2009. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has issued a "red" aviation alert (the highest level), which alerts aircraft in nearby airspace of possible dangers resulting from volcanic ash. Wind is currently pushing the cloud of ash away from Anchorage, though Alaska Airlines has already canceled 19 flights to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport due to concerns about the ash. The Federal Aviation Administration has no immediate plans to close the airport, though further disruptions are likely in the coming days as flights are rerouted. Officials have advised individuals in affected areas to close their windows and avoid driving as much as possible.
