Two underground trains collide in Washington D.C

23 Jun 2009
Two Metrorail trains collided in the Washington, D.C., area at approximately 1700 local time yesterday. The collision involved a six-car train and another train travelling on the Red Line above ground between the Takoma Park and Fort Totten stations, near the D.C./Maryland border. Reports indicate that at least seven people were killed and more than 75 others were injured. Speculation has focused on a possible failure in the signal system and operator error. While minimal Red Line service has resumed, there have been reports of significant delays throughout the Metrorail system. Metro officials have urged commuters to avoid the Red Line.
