Tropical Storm Alex became a Category 1 hurricane

Tropical Storm Alex became a Category 1 hurricane late on 29 June 2010 as it moved across the Gulf of Mexico toward northeastern Mexico and southeastern Texas. As of 1200 UTC on 30 June Hurricane Alex was located approximately 220 mi/355 km southeast of Brownsville, Texas, and had maximum sustained winds of up to 80 mph/70 kt with higher gusts. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, the hurricane is moving west-northwest at a speed of 7mph/6 kt and is expected to make landfall in northeastern Mexico as a weak Category 2 storm later on 30 June or early on 1 July. Hurricane Warnings are in effect for the coastline from Baffin Bay, Texas, to La Cruz, Mexico. Tropical Storm Warnings extend north to Port O’Connor, Texas, and south to Cabo Rojo, Mexico.
