Plane veers off runway at Denver airport
22 Dec 2008
On 20 December 2008 Continental Airlines Flight 1404 veered off the runway and landed in a ravine during an attempted takeoff at Denver International Airport (KDEN/DEN). The Boeing 737 aircraft was departing for Houston when it veered off the runway, caught fire and landed approximately 200 yd/185 m from the end of the runway. Ground crews extinguished the flames, and all 115 people on board were able to evacuate. At least 38 people were injured, one of whom was in serious condition. Some delays were reported; however, flight operations returned to normal shortly after the incident. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the incident, although a preliminary investigation has reportedly revealed problems with the aircraft’s brakes and landing gear.
