Earthquake Strikes Off the Californian Coast

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off the coast of northern California on 9 January 2010 at 1627 local time (0027 GMT 10 January). The quake was centered approximately 20 mi/32 km west-northwest of Ferndale, California, and occurred at a depth of approximately 10 mi/16 km. The quake caused power outages and minor damage to buildings in Ferndale and surrounding areas; however, there were no reports of casualties.
