Heavy Rains & Flooding In Kampala Region
23 Feb 2010
Heavy rains and subsequent flooding paralyzed business operations in several areas of Kampala on 22 February 2010. Reports indicate that the rains began at approximately 0400 local time and lasted through 1700 local time. The capital’s low-lying areas, informal settlements and its suburbs -- including Kawempe, Bwaise, Katwe, Kalerwe, Kireka, Ndeeba and Bugolobi -- were the worst affected; Clock Tower and Kisenyi were the most affected areas in the city center. Meteorologists have forecast additional rains lasting until May and are advising residents to relocate from flood prone areas. Officials have attributed the flooding to high population density and a poor drainage system.
