3 killed in Istanbul shootout

On 27 April 2009 a shootout occurred between Turkish police officers and a militant in an Istanbul residential area. The shooting occurred after police officers conducted a raid on an apartment building in the Bostanci district. The militant threw explosives at police officers and three people, including the militant and a police officer, were killed in the ensuing gun battle. Seven police officers and a TV journalist sustained injuries. The target of the raid belonged to Revolutionary Headquarters, a left-wing group that is suspected of having links to the Kurdish separatist organization Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
