Security increased ahead of summit

Security authorities will begin extensive checks of all vehicles entering Piarco International Airport (TTPP/POS) from the 10th April in advance of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, to be held in Port of Spain from 17 to 19 April. Authorities will also increase patrols of the airport and institute random car searches. The area encompassing the airport and surrounding communities of Piarco Village and Oropune Village will be labeled a "security exclusion zone" and will undergo stringent traffic and security restrictions beginning at 2359 local time on 16 April and ending at 2400 local time on 20 April. Employees will be shuttled to and from the airport accompanied by a police escort. Authorities warn travelers to expect travel delays of approximately an hour and a half during the lockdown period.
