Although there is expected to be a rise in temperatures in the next few days, this will only be temporary, it has been claimed.
Those who have been caught out by the weather in the past couple of weeks may not be pleased to hear the big chill is set to continue.
As the initial snow and ice begins to thaw and individuals get some much-need respite, the Arctic conditions are not expected to stay away for long. This could be mean further travel misery for motorists, as the Guardian said there were 76 road traffic collisions reported on Cheshire roads and motorways between 06:00 and 14:00 GMT on Thursday (December 9th).
John Hammond from the Met Office said: "December has got off to a very cold start. The last time we saw prolonged cold weather in December with such low temperatures and this amount of snowfall was 1981." He noted the UK is set to face inclement weather for the remainder of the month, which may put some winter travel plans into chaos.
The problems got so bad in Scotland that the Army had to be called in to help clear the ice and snow in Edinburgh, as successive days with sub-zero temperatures have taken their toll on the country.
Yorkshire is also still coming to terms with the hangover from the big freeze, with bus services experiencing delays. And icy roads are expected to cause problems for drivers in the area, which means due care and attention should be exercised, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. The Met Office has said ice is till a risk despite the expected increase in temperatures in the next few days.
