Volunteering abroad is becoming a more popular choice for those who want to get away from the country's financial troubles, it has been suggested.
More people are choosing to undertake volunteering abroad as it is often a cheaper way of taking an extended trip.
This is according to Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com.
His comments are likely to be encouraging for those who have just bought backpacker insurance and are getting ready to head off around the world.
The longer one travels for the more expensive it is, he said - so arranging a placement can mean savings and a different kind of experience.
"You have the opportunity to head down to Africa and to Asia. The cost of the ticket and if you get a good organisation out there, it can cost very little," he added.
However, regardless of where someone goes, it is considered crucial to take out the right type of cover before setting off.
If an injury were to happen to the traveller abroad and they were not insured, it can cost in the thousands to treat.
