Japan could be the ideal destination for a food-themed break, it has been suggested.
Food lovers may want to book their flights and
travel insurance for a trip to Japan this year.
A new Michelin guide has been launched for restaurants in Kyoto and Osaka, offering holidaymakers the opportunity to explore these cities' cuisines in detail.
Kylie Clark of the Japan National Tourist Organisation says that each destination has its own culinary highlights.
In Kyoto in particular, travellers should not miss out on the chance to stay in a traditional inn, known as a ryokan, and have a kaiseki dinner, she explains.
"The cuisine places great import on seasonal ingredients and subtle flavours. Regional specialties of Kyoto include shojin-ryori, vegetarian dishes developed by Buddhist monks and kaiseki-ryori, cuisine stemming from the tea ceremony," she adds.
Osaka's regional specialities consist of takoyaki octopus balls and puffer fish sashimi.
A number of tour operators have launched gourmet tours of Kyoto recently, although it is Osaka that is generally seen as the food capital of Japan.
