Over four in ten travellers do not check whether they need vaccines before they set off, according to a new study.
Almost half of holidaymakers could be jeopardising their health by failing to research vaccines before they go away, a new poll has revealed.
The research by Post Office Travel Insurance showed that 44 per cent of travellers do not look up recommended vaccines and medication before setting off, while 31 per cent could not remember which diseases they had already received vaccinations for or when they got them.
Its survey also indicated that many holidaymakers are confused when it comes to vaccination recommendations for particular countries, with 94 per cent unaware of advice to get tetanus and hepatitis A injections before visiting Slovenia and Bulgaria.
Rachel Croft, head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said that travellers could be at risk of invalidating their
holiday insurance if they go abroad without having the advised vaccines.
"It is important that customers take the necessary care to safeguard their health and avoid the potential financial implications - the average cost of a medical claim last year was £800," she remarked.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office advises holidaymakers to check with their doctor about whether they need vaccines as soon as possible after booking their break.
