TV shows influence holiday choices

Shows like Frozen Planet cause demand for different holiday destinations.

With the peak booking season for holidaymakers just about to start on Boxing Day, many will be looking for the chance to go to different destinations this year as they look to broaden their horizons and perhaps try out the sort of destinations they have not visited before.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) however, many people across the UK will find that they have their decision on where to travel to this year influenced by the television programmes and films they have seen, both throughout the year, and over the Christmas period.

The association has said that programmes such as BBC's epic documentary series Frozen Planet can see people looking to seize the chance to experience it for themselves. It said that the success of the documentary has already led to an influx of enquiries from people looking for travel insurance who want to embark on Antarctic and Arctic journeys themselves to get a taste of the real frozen planet firsthand.

ABTA also says that the annual Top Gear Christmas special could see people travelling across the globe, looking to follow in the footsteps of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond by taking trips to Asia, and more specifically India, whilst the popular period drama Downton Abbey, and its much hyped seasonal episode, will see a boost in the numbers of people who are looking to book domestic holidays in stately homes and manors.

Parents may also see themselves pressured by kids to take them on holidays to Paris thanks to the showing of popular Disney film Ratatouille.

Victoria Bacon, ABTA head of communications says: "Film and television programmes have a huge influence on British holidaymakers' travel plans. It is clear destinations benefit enormously when used as film locations, which is why many are delighted to be chosen."

Over the years, many Disney films have helped to boost the tourism industries in both Paris and Orlando for British holidaymakers, as kids look to enjoy the magic of the animation giant with many of their favourite characters.
