An expert has said that holidaymakers should sample some local foods when visiting Cyprus.
People travelling to Cyprus for a break this
summer should not stick to eating homely foods such as pies, chips and pizzas, an industry expert has said.
According to research by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), over half - 58 per cent - of all holidaymakers heading abroad prefer to eat familiar foods during their time away, while more than one-quarter - 26 per cent - allow food to influence their decision on where to go.
However, with 57 per cent of people indicating that they felt healthier when eating a Mediterranean diet, Lilian Panayi, spokesperson for the CTO, has urged travellers to make the most of their holiday by sampling the local cuisine.
"The beauty of Cyprus is that you'll actually eat food that is in season, so you're tasting it at its freshest," she said.
One of the best bits about staying in Cyprus is being able to drive into the countryside and stumble across small villages where the country's gastronomic delights are often at their best, the spokesperson added.
Among the foods highly recommended by Ms Panayi, kleftiko lamb - which translates to thief's roast - features as a must-try dish. The delicacy is left to cook in its own juices in a clay oven before having aromatic herbs such as basil and oregano added to it.
However, she added that there is something for everyone there as, with 300 days of sunshine per year, all produce is beautifully fresh and delicious.
Anyone visiting Cyprus this year should look into taking out
travel insurance before leaving home.
