Travelling with pets to become easier from next year

Those heading overseas will find less restrictions when taking animals.

For people who just cannot find that all important dog-sitter before they jet off on holidays to visit family abroad, it will become easier to travel with pets from the turn of the year.

At the moment, pets which are travelling abroad need to be quarantined in the UK for an extended period of time, so people who are off to visit family in other countries may wait for an extended period before they can be reunited with their furry friend.

In June, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) said that new laws to come into place in 2012 will see British laws come into line with those already evident in the EU. It also pointed out that previous laws on quarantine, which had their foundations in the 1800s, were long since outdated.

Pet owners travelling abroad will be able to save a collective £7 million per year in fees under the new law.

Nadine Hallak, travel expert for Cheapflights.co.uk said that this is great news for travel insurance customers.

"January 1st 2012 will see new changes to the law which will make travelling with pets easier."

She went on to say that people should remember that their pet will need a pet passport when they travel to another country, and that contacting their vet is the way to obtain this.

Ms Hallak recommended that people looking to travel with their pets should head to France if they want to find an animal-friendly environment. She said that the resort of Mirabel in France was probably one of the best, as it offers some chalets in which pets are allowed to stay, something which is uncommon across the globe.
