Holidaymakers should ensure they are familiar with the local customs of their resort before they make a trip.
Taking the time to research a holiday destination to find out about local customs and traditions should be something all travellers do, one travel expert has stated.
Amelie Hurst, spokesperson at TripAdvisor, said: "Researching a destination before travelling to it can mean the difference between a dream holiday and a living nightmare."
She highlighted the fact that there had been several publicised cases of late in which it was clear Brits had not considered the consequences of their behaviour in their travel destinations.
Ms Hurst explained that holidaymakers are able to check on whether certain behaviours are acceptable in their chosen resort, such as public displays of affection and topless sunbathing.
This comes after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office revealed many Brits get into trouble abroad, from hospital stays to lost or stolen passports.
According to the report, many of these instances were alcohol or drug-related.
Spain was named as the country in which the most people needed hospital treatment abroad between April last year and March 2009.
