A ferry crossing could offer the environmentally-friendly yet comfortable trip some travellers are looking for.
Travellers looking for something different to do while on their annual holiday could book a ferry crossing from Britain to a nearby European destination.
Richard Hammond, chief executive and founder of greentraveller.co.uk, explained that this mode of transport is not only environmentally-friendly, but can also provide a comfortable trip.
"Travel is about the travelling, the journey ... taking a ferry can be a great way to travel," he affirmed.
What's more, those interested in wildlife could make a reservation for crossings between Brittany and northern Spain, as they provide "one of the best places to see whales and dolphins".
Many vessels have cinemas, restaurants and entertainment for children and families and often boast "fantastic" facilities more akin to a hotel than a boat.
Tourists from the south coast of England, Wales or Liverpool are already in the prime position to make a ferry crossing to mainland Europe or Ireland and can rest in the knowledge they are not leaving an enormous carbon footprint.
Mr Hammond explained: "The recent figures give the greenhouse gas emissions associated with foot passengers on ferries as being very low compared with other forms of transport."
Indeed, annual trip insurance policyholders concerned about their environmental impact may be pleased to hear that a foot passenger on a ferry contributes 22.54g of carbon dioxide per kilometre to the atmosphere, compared with 205.15g of the gas per kilometre flown on a domestic flight, according to figures published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.
