Travellers 'can reduce risk of baggage problems'
Travel insurance customers can reduce the risk of having any problems at the airport by packing more carefully, an air travel industry consumer council has said.
James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council, said passengers had to accept some of the responsibility for problems with baggage at the airport.
"There are things the passengers can do to stop their bags getting lost - passengers often over-pack bags - the locks break because they are over-packed," he said.
Mr Fremantle went on to say that one reason for bags going missing at the airport is caused by the fact travellers do not put their name or address on their luggage.
If for some reason there is a break in the chain in the baggage handling system, it is difficult to determine the identity of the owner, he added.
Figures from the Post Office released in May revealed some 13 per cent of travellers have experienced damaged baggage or stolen items when travelling in the last three years.
The Association of European Airlines claimed that that 85 per cent of bags that are delayed by its carriers are returned to their owners on average within 48 hours.
