Travel insurance "vital" for holidaymakers
UK holidaymakers must take out travel insurance before heading abroad, GMTV's Dr Hilary Jones has said.
Responding to a new Department of Health (DoH) survey that showed a substantial number of British people are reluctant to seek treatment for illnesses while in a foreign country due to the cost, Dr Jones suggested that adequate travel insurance can ease visitors' worries.
Referring specifically to Europe, he commented: "It is vital that you carry a valid EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), as well as comprehensive travel insurance.
"The last thing you want to be thinking about when you're on holiday is paying unnecessary medical bills."
According to the DoH research, approximately 50 per cent of UK residents have fallen ill while on holiday, but 35 per cent have delayed seeking treatment until they got home, with a lack of travel insurance the chief contributing factor.
Earlier this month, the DoH warned that British holidaymakers should check the expiry date on their EHICs, with more than three million set to have become invalid by the end of March.
