Research has revealed that 13 per cent of single trip travel insurance policies do not cover winter sports.
Thrill-seeking holidaymakers who cannot wait to strap their skis on and take to the piste do not appear to be taking the necessary steps to protect themselves should the worst happen and they have an accident while away.
New figures from research firm Defaqto indicate that 13 per cent of single trip travel insurance policies do not in fact cover winter sports, with wide variations seen in the level and type of protection provided in those subscriptions that do.
For example, 31 per cent of policies would provide under £200 of cover if someone lost their ski pass, while six per cent would not provide any cover for the theft or loss of hired sports equipment.
Furthermore, of the policies that do provide cover for this latter situation, 80 per cent would only hand over under £1,000, with just two per cent providing cover of £2,000 or above. And two per cent of all policies do not cover any equipment at all.
Insight analyst for general insurance Mike Powell stressed how important it is for holidaymakers to make sure they arrange the appropriate travel insurance before they get on that plane, in order to protect the money they have spent on booking the trip.
He noted that, in order to make sure they do get the right kind of cover for their holiday, jet-setters need to identify the particular features they need from a policy and the options that offer this.
"Although important, price should not be the primary basis for comparison - after all, buying the cheapest cover available could end up being the most expensive option if it doesn't provide adequate cover for someone’s holiday or their possessions," Mr Powell went on to say.
Anyone looking to combine winter sports with a bit of romance might want to head to Switzerland. Zermatt Tourism officials recently said going to Rothorn to watch the sunrise is quite nice, as is getting up early to see the sun come over the Matterhorn.
