Travel insurance is "as important as a suitcase"
Travel insurance should not be underestimated, holidaymakers are warned ahead of the peak summer holiday season.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), said: "Travel insurance is as important as a suitcase. Don't underestimate it."
"Always buy it, it is cheap to buy but make sure you are buying the right thing for you," he continued.
Mr Trudgill thought that many people going on a holiday see travel insurance as a "commodity" but in truth it is a product that people rely on.
He went on to say that BIBA had noted problems when people had bought travel insurance as an add-on to their holiday at a travel agent.
Often, holidaymakers are not consulted about whether they have any pre-existing medical conditions or whether they will be taking part in any potentially hazardous activities as they sell their generic travel insurance package, he said.
A recent report from EssentialTravel.co.uk revealed some 70 per cent of Brits were unaware that a travel insurance claim may be invalidated if caused when the person was excessively drunk.
Cheap holiday insurance from Direct Travel Insurance could be one way to keep total holiday expenditure down.
