The AA believes many motorists will face difficulties today
Those taking to the roads for their Christmas getaway could find their travel plans are disrupted as a result of snow and ice across much of the UK.
According to the
AA's Paul Watters, today (December 23rd) could be a "problematic" one on the roads, with many drivers expected to require assistance.
It is estimated some 18 million motorists will get behind the wheel during one of the busiest travel times of the year, so the organisation is urging people to be cautious en route.
The AA reported 21,000 call-outs yesterday and it does not expect today to be any quieter, Mr Watters added.
And travel chaos is also expected to hit the rail service, with cancellations and disruptions on many routes.
Edward Welsh, director of corporate affairs at the
Association of Train Operating Companies, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Some train companies are running reduced services in some cases.
"Three train companies have quite significant reductions in their timetables, others are more minor."
He explained there were certainly a number of cancellations yesterday, causing many travellers to be frustrated, but there were also many services that ran smoothly.
It is hoped that the timetables will be kept today, as many travellers try to get to their Christmas destinations.
Airports are aiming to get back on schedule, after major hubs such as Heathrow were forced to close their runways when treacherous weather conditions hit much of the UK.
Eurostar was also suffering, with lengthy queues forming outside St Pancras station as people tried to get to their European destinations.
