Individuals in the country could be set for more travel difficulties after snowfall.
Travel chaos could return to the UK after more snow fell in the country today (January 4th).
The latest bout of inclement weather has seen the
Met Office issue further severe warnings, with the north-west of England expected to suffer from heavy snow.
And this is expected to lead to widespread icy roads, which will mean motorists will have to be extra careful when travelling to and from their destination.
Other areas including Yorkshire, West Midlands and East Midlands are also set to suffer due to the snowfall.
There was further winter travel misery for up to 400 motorists, after snow showers on the A171 between Whitby and Scarborough left them stranded on the exposed coastal road.
The Guardian reported the Humber Coastguards had to be called in to help rescue the individuals.
Aisling Creevey, of MeteoGroup, the Press Association's weather division, said there is an "unsettled" look to the first week of the new year, with a substantial amount of rain and sleet expected.
"We are expecting five-to-eight centimetres across parts of Dumfries and Galloway and South Lanarkshire, turning increasingly into rain as the night progresses," she added.
As the cold snap causes misery for commuters, it appears that those getting into cars for journeys will have to continue to bring provisions with them.
According to BBC analyst Roger Harrabin, the Met Office was aware the UK was set to experience an "exceptionally cold winter", but chose not to reveal the information because of the embarrassment caused by a wrong prediction of a warm summer in 2009.
