Drivers must pay attention to the road surface with a view to preventing travel chaos as routes may have been damaged during the recent winter snap.
The
Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice to help drivers stay safe while navigating routes that may have been affected with potholes as a result of freezing temperatures.
Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, said: "Drivers must learn how to deal with the state of the roads today, so bear in mind ... tips for safely navigating potholes and broken surfaces."
Motorists should leave plenty of room between their own car and the one in front with a view to spotting holes before they are driven over, while those that have been repaired might have reappeared, so drivers should try to remember their location.
Heavy vehicles such as lorries and buses put more pressure on roads, which could see more potholes appearing in areas where they are common.
However, travel insurance policyholders using routes where cyclists and motorcyclists are prevalent could do well to maintain a steady speed and avoid swerving on damaged roads to protect vulnerable users on two wheels.
People living in Swansea have been warned that road conditions in the city could be particularly bad, as some were left untreated when ice struck in recent weeks, according to This is South Wales.
Morriston Labour councillor Rob Stewart stated: "We have already started to see a lot of potholes appearing, which will only get worse over the next few days as people start using the roads again as they get back to work."
