Tourists warned to be cautious during Nigeria elections

Parts of Nigeria have been disrupted by the elections

Those visiting Nigeria would be wise to follow travel advice surrounding the election dates.

Visitors to Nigeria over the coming weeks should exercise caution, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised.

It explains the gubernatorial elections are planned for April 26th, but there could well be a certain amount of disruption during the surrounding days.

Travellers must be vigilant, especially in areas where large public gatherings are being held.

"You should avoid polling booths unless you are a registered voter, an accredited observer or an accredited journalist," the body notes.

It is possible that the security situation in the country could deteriorate as a result of the political goings-on, in which case unrest and violence could quickly break out.

The FCO states: "If you encounter a threatening or intimidating situation do not try to make your way through it.

"Turn round and go home."

Authorities have placed certain restrictions that may concern travel insurance policyholders during the election days, as vehicular movements could be affected.

Airport journeys may consequently be altered as a result of the constraints, thought to apply from 08:00-16:00 and 22:00-06:00 local time.

Elections for the Nigerian National Assembly were held on April 9th and presidential voting occurred on April 16th.

Travel advice previously issued by the FCO noted localised violence had been reported after the latter event.

Northern parts of Nigeria were affected, with Sokoto, Kano and Kaduna States named as particular destinations where violence occurred.

Comprehensive medical and travel insurance should be taken out by British tourists heading to the nation prior to their journey, the body noted.
